New Municipal Development Plan (MDP) to be considered for adoption.

Rocky View County Council will hold a special Council meeting tomorrow (February 16, 2021) starting at 9:00 a.m., to consider three important items.

Council will consider adopting the new Municipal Development Plan (MDP). Council and administration began the process of drafting a new MDP more than a year ago with significant public consultation being part of the process. The new MDP should help RVC continue with its efforts to cut red tape and streamline processes for ratepayers.

What is the Municipal Development Plan?

Rocky View County’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP) sets out the guidelines for growth and development in the County for the next 20 years. The MDP provides a comprehensive land-use policy framework that outlines where and how development and growth may take place across the County.

The Municipal Development Plan is a statutory document required by the Province of Alberta as specified by the Municipal Government Act.

Why is the Plan Needed?

The County has grown by approximately 15,000 people over the past 20 years and will continue to grow. The MDP sets the vision for how to accommodate this growth in a sustainable manner and will serve as an important decision-making tool for Council, County Administration, developers, landowners, residents, and other stakeholders.

South and North Springbank ASP’s to be considered for adoption.

Council will also be considering the adoption of the north and south Springbank ASP’s.

Council recently asked administration to split the existing Springbank ASP in two, to better manage the size and diversity of the lands involved. You can view the proposed ASP’s here:

We must point out that these plans will have to go to the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) for approval. So after all the work the municipality has done to engage residents to draft a plan to prepare for its future, the CMRB, under the de-facto control of Calgary could effectively kibosh these plans anyway. We remind you to help protect and preserve local autonomy by contacting the UCP and specifically, Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver to ask him to dismantle this unnecessary 4th layer of government and allow free-enterprise and choice, and competition to remain in the marketplace.

Minister McIver can be reached at:
