4% Tax Hike Approved in Rocky View

It was a busy week for Rocky View Council, as they held two special budget meetings to review the 2022 Operating and Capital Budget. They heard reports from every administrative department and in the end, approved administration’s recommended 4% tax increase. This is a substantive hike, and it follows years of very low or no increases.

The Rocky View operating budget is $197.3 million with an additional $19.7 million slated for capital projects.

The County sites inflation and the increased pressure to deliver quality services while dealing with the rising costs of goods and services as the reasons for the increase. Rocky View County still boasts one of the lowest tax rates in the province.

This year’s budget shows we are not without our challenges and must react to maintain service levels amid rising costs outside of our control,” says County Mayor Don Kochan. “While we understand any increase may be challenging for some residents and business owners, we believe this is a responsible budget that allows us to deliver on our commitments now and into the future.”

Councillor Greg Boehlke stated:

“Although nobody likes to see tax increases, least of all me, the reality is that Rocky View has held the line for a long time, and if we want to keep service levels where they are, we are going to have to go with a hike this year.”

We should point out that the 4% hike is not official at this point. This percentage is based on today’s tax assessment numbers and the 4% is subject to change in April based on final assessment numbers at that time.

The 2022 budget is guided by the vision, mission, and strategic objectives in Council’s Strategic Plan – Leading Rocky View County, Council’s 15 to 20 Year Strategic Plan, developed in consultation with stakeholders from the community.
