Light Agenda/CMRB Presents to Council
Rocky View County held its first regular Council meeting of the New Year on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. The agenda was fairly light. There were a few Public Hearings, all smaller land-use redesignation items. Perhaps the most significant item on the agenda was a presentation made to Rocky View Council by administration of the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB).
CMRB administrators started with a little history lesson on the CMRB and discussed its mandate, which is touted as being to promote long-term sustainability in the Calgary Region. They actually talked about providing “greater certainty to developers,” which of course is the complete opposite of what they are doing. It was mentioned that there have been 5 applications turned down since the inception of the Board and they have all been in Rocky View.
The question-and-answer period was interesting with Councillors Schule and Boehlke grilling them hard on behalf of Rocky View and all rural residents. Schule questioned the need for the massive annexation that Calgary has put forward east of the city in Rocky View, pointing out that this hardly seems collaborative. The Board Chair Greg Clark was quick to dodge the question stating that the Board had no say on annexation matters. Councillor Boehlke picked up on the subject pointing out that the CMRB’s own Growth Plan consultant had stated that there was no need for any annexations in the Calgary Region. Boehlke suggested that the annexed land should have been included in the Joint Planning Area (JPA) and negotiations on cost sharing and revenue sharing could have taken place. Again, there was not much comment from CMRB administration. Councillor Hanson, who is the Rocky View representative on the Board also asked some questions, as did Mayor Don Kochan. Once the video is available, you can watch the full presentation, complete with the Q & A period here. The session with the CMRB is from 1:00-2:00pm.
